Leucine and Aging Well

Leucine and Aging Well

An important factor in club/mace training is maintaining muscle mass as we age. Sarcopenia (muscle wasting due to lessened activity) causes a myriad of issues beyond just simply losing size, including metabolic dysfunction and bone fractures. It is important to exercise AND have a good nutrition plan. Adding Leucine to your nutrition might help reduce age related muscle wasting. Leucine is an essential amino acid found in some foods, but, for older adults it should also be supplemented at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dose is 3 grams per meal.

Foods that contain good amounts of leucine are meats, dairy, lentils and nuts. It is still good to supplement with Leucine capsules or powder a meal time. Vitamin D is also required to absorb leucine, so make sure you are good on the Vit D, also.

The bulk of steel club training tribe is over 45 years old. there's a good reason for this and it probably has to do with being injured either from training or life itself. But it's pretty much older folks who've wisened up their fitness IQ by focusing more on the quality of movement and less on the big weights. Plus clubs and maces have the unique feature of complex patterns requiring high concentration. This helps build better cognitive function and may reduce or prolong cognitive decline from issues such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's. Leucine will keep you in the game way longer and those are the results we're looking for. Train hard!
